Food Waste Friday – May 14, 2010 Edition

I am so relieved.  We did so much better this week!  Now this may be because we had pizza a total of 3, yup 3, times last week.  I lurve me some pizza, so it never goes to waste around here!

What did go to waste was some corn.  I looked at it all week with intentions to add it to something, but that never happened.  Then I thought I would just warm it up and eat it on it’s own.  That, also, never happened.

This week we have some chili that definitely needs to eaten up.  My Mom has gone on vacation so she gave us some perishables that need to be used up also: a tomato, some yogurt, and some lettuce.  (Oohh, maybe I’ll have some lettuce with chili over it for a kind of taco salad.  Yum!)  I have high hopes that next week’s edition will be picture free!

Food Waste Friday – The shameful edition

I can’t believe I am going to post this.  I am so ashamed.  We wasted too much food this week.

So bad!  There’s the leftover black bean soup that I couldn’t sell to anyone.  Then there were two jars 1/2 full of spaghetti sauce.  Had I thought about it sooner I would have combined them to go on the spaghetti that we had early in the week.  Unfortunately it still would have been wasted because the spaghetti hung around for too long too.

A note about the spaghetti.  We ran out of plastic wrap the same day that I went grocery shopping, of course after I got home.  I decided not to make a special trip to the store for it.  The spaghetti was in a white Tupperware bowl with a blue lid.  I honestly think that because we couldn’t see what was in the bowl we didn’t eat it.  I just skimmed over it whenever I looked in the fridge and I’m sure Mr. D just plain old forgot what was in there.  We now have more plastic wrap thanks to Monday’s shopping trip so I am putting my theory to the test this week.

4.30.10 Food Waste Friday

Last week I mentioned I had some zucchini to use up.  I did it!  Unfortunately I think part of what I used it up in is going to end up being waste next week.  I made some really healthy whole wheat zucchini muffins and they didn’t turn out so great.  They are a bit dry, so they are edible with some butter, but still not great.  I also put some in my spaghetti sauce so that used up all of it!  Yippee for me!

This week, however, I do have some waste.

That is some leftover salsa from takeout last week.  It’s so good, so I’m not sure why I didn’t use it up.  The other is 1/2 a cut up apple that Big I didn’t finish.  That will go in the compost.  I should have eaten that too, but I just didn’t.

Right now we are working on some spaghetti that needs to be used up and also some black bean soup.  I don’t have high hopes for the soup.  It probably should already be thrown out, but I’ll give it one more day and mention it to Mr. D.  It’s weird, I made the same soup a while back and we gobbled it up, no leftovers.  I must have done something different because this time, not so great.  Actually, now that I think about it, I used dry beans to start this one, and canned beans last time.  Maybe that’s the difference?

4.23.10 Food waste Friday

Food waste is something that we have struggled with through the years. It’s not something I’m proud of and I shudder to think of all the money that has gone to the dump. In an effort to change my evil ways, I am going to join The Frugal Girl and post my own food waste. I’m hoping that the embarassment of putting it out there for the world to see will encourage me to use everything that I bring into the house!

This week I have a small bowl of baked beans. We cooked them up to go with some bbq we had. We didn’t eat them all and they somehow got lost in the refridgerator. They look ok in the picture but they had been in there for over a week. So in the trash they went.

This week I have some zucchini that I bought with the idea of having them as a side dish. That didn’t work out so now they are pushing the end of their useable life. The plan is to make some muffins with them. Unfortunately that has been the plan for the past couple of days and I still haven’t gotten around to it!
